Bookies Gathering in Detroit

No, it’s not the depression and it’s not the Mafia [although for safety sake [mine] I’m capitalizing it].  The Bookies, for the second year are gathering in Detroit for their Bookfest aka the Annual Detroit Festival of Books.   It is sponsored by the Book Club of Detroit and has been organized by chairman Ryan M. Place.

This year’s fair will include one of the region’s best known rare book dealers, John King, as well as California’s Andy Foster of Milton & Hubble Books.  Other prominent sellers and collectors are also expected to be there.

For tag-alongs there will be about 200 vendors of all descriptions, 2 beer vendors, a DJ playing funk music and a ton of stuff, some of it legal, in the parking lot.

It is a 1 day event to be held Sunday, July 15th, 2018.

As many as twenty-thousand are expected to attend.  If you go that will make it 20,001.

Location:  Eastern Market, Shed’s 5 and 6, Detroit

It will be fun!!!!!!

Yes, the Book Club of Detroit, flourishing since the 1950s, is justly proud of this
continuing event. The Club, whose membership has included many distinguished
collectors, publishers, scholars, and university administrators, has been a principal
player in organizing many exciting bookings and guest lectures in the Detroit area,
not least a recent exhibition and talk on Shakespeare's First Folio, co-hosted by the
Detroit Institute of Arts and Wayne State University. My interview with the Club's
treasurer, Maurice Barie, a respected backgammon champion and historian, and also a restorer of a rare 1930 backgammon book ("Backgammon As Played In Hollywood"),
will run in an upcoming issue of the Florida Bibliophile Society newsletter (now online).
My first introduction to the world of books was in Detroit, where I studied and also taught
in the 1960s; so I take special pleasure in seeing frequent media coverage on the rebounding of the Motor City. Even at a distance, I am contributing to that new attention.
And so is Bruce McKinney. I like that.
